Earth Day, Recycling and Parent Day

On Tuesday we celebrated Earth Day in the classroom by having a "trash less lunch!" The children who brought their lunches packed in reusable containers and used real silverware.

The boys and girls had decorated cloth napkins with insects to use instead of paper on this special day. We talked about how we should keep using these cloth napkins EVERYDAY so we can save all of our many beautiful trees.

School lunches were also enjoyed on plastic reusable plates that the children brought from home. Talking about the importance of recycling and then practicing it on Earth Day definitely made an impression! They talk about it with friends as they recycle each day.

The children continued this enthusiasm in the Exploratorium by using as many recycled items as possible to build a "Recycling Party!"

A bridge was built on a basket using old beads and paper paper towel tubes as they worked together as a team!
Hexagon blocks and tree blocks were used to construct special environments for numerous insects.
Others enjoyed building zoo habitats for zebras, lions, tigers and giraffes. Some were taller than the children!
Different shaped blocks were layered forming adjoining inclined planes.

When checking out books at the library one Lively Ladybug chose a book, "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," and it was almost as big as she was!

The Lively Ladybugs have been quite busy this week making special gifts for their parents.
Decorating their gift bag and filling it with surprises for their parents was exciting though taken very seriously!
Our newest ladybug met a new friend this week that speaks Korean with him. He was so tickled that he showed her everything on the playground!
We have had a recent new addition to the playground, "The Waterworks!" Different types of containers are used to gather water from a bin and then pour into funnels connected to tubes. The tubes carry the water back into the bin and it is "RECYCLED and REUSED" all over again. The children make predictions about which tubes might carry the water faster.

On Friday we celebrated the big day we have been preparing for, "PARENT'S DAY!!!!"
The children entered the program singing "We are the Dinosaurs" followed by "The Pledge of Allegiance" once upon the stage.
The children held their flags high as they recited the pledge.

After singing several of their most favorite songs the children gave Mrs. McIvor and Mrs. Gootson flowers and thanked them for all of the special things that they do.
Next the parents were invited to the classroom where we shared some special moments from this year and watched a slideshow of the children in action!

Then the children gave their parents the special gifts that they had made for them.
The parents loved their bookmarks with their child's self portraits and picture.

"My Special Mommy and Daddy" cards were fun to read as Mom and Dad admired portraits of themselves!
We all enjoyed cookies and punch, especially the icing!!
What an incredibly fabulous Parent's Day!! Thank you Moms and Dads for being there and to Mrs. McIvor for putting the program together. You are all the very, very best!!!

Celebrate the Arts Week

What a great kickoff for our week of Celebrate the Arts as we met the cast for the "Sound of Music" performance at the Lower Division town meeting. They gave us a little taste of what was to come by singing a few songs.
Next we were off to hear a little blue grass music and learn about their instruments.
Everyone enjoyed listening and were great at clapping their hands and moving their bodies to the rhythm of the music.

On the playground some of the children continued the beat while playing different musical instruments.
Some rather interesting insects are crawling around in the grassy water table. The children used their fine motor skills by putting on garden gloves and using rakes and shovels to locate and identify insects. Then they placed the insects into bug catchers to examine them more closely.

Another fun activity this week was when Alpha students joined JK to listen to storytellers as they told fascinating tales!
Green "flubber" was shaped into pancakes and rocks. Some rocks were made into insect fossils.

Quite an imagination was used to create green "flubber" fingernails! This lead to an interesting discussion following the comment, "Look my fingernails stay on!"

Marker drawings have been a popular choice at the art center!
Not only do the children enjoy building with velcro blocks but also discovering what materials they might stick to.

Building with hour glass blocks is almost like solving a puzzle!

Hexagon blocks became the perfect display for many crawling creatures!

That beautiful lime green chrysalis that we had been observing for about two weeks turned very dark black in color. Then we couldn't believe our eyes the same afternoon a beautiful Monarch butterfly emerged. His wings were still quite wet and we were very careful as we observed him in wonder.
The following morning he was spotted on the drying rack by the back door.
He was just waiting to see the world outside.

So off he flew into the sky!

After reading "Love Your World," by Dawn Sirett we discussed all of the many things that we could do to reduce, reuse and recycle. Then the children decorated cloth napkins to be used for our "Trashless Lunch" next week.

On Friday the children enjoyed music and movement activities with Ms. Colleen and even pretended to be animals.

With Ms. Katie they learned to use their voice like a frisbee and and how to pretend to make something imaginary out of clay.

Alpha and JK sang "This Land is Your Land" and Pawpaw Patch" out loud and clear at the Celebrate the Arts performance.
Following the performance parents, students and teachers enjoyed a picnic together while visiting with friends.
