Recycling, Reading Buddies and Dentist Field Trip

Investigating and observing the many recyclable items has been a very popular activity this week. Some children enjoy working in groups  building structures with these materials while others prefer to work by themselves on recycled carpet squares. While building the boys and girls talk about shapes, ordering items from smallest to largest and largest to smallest and balance. When finished building the children put away all of their materials by sorting them into the appropriate container.

A Milkweed Plant has been an exciting addition to our classroom! The children learned that is the "host" plant for the Monarch butterfly as we carefully examined it's leaves for small white eggs.
The children used like characteristics to match identical symmetrical butterflies into pairs.
Sorting with apples, pears and bananas reminded the children of the book, "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" by Eric Carle.

Using a magnet to move puzzle pieces in an insect puzzle was a challenge and lots of fun as well as identifying the three body parts of the caterpillar puzzle.

The Lively Ladybugs have been using insects in interactive play with the recent "Insects in Spring" bulletin board as they moved about amongst the flowers and trees in the bright sunshine.
Others enjoyed sorting the many insects by color and type and then placing them into a line forming a parade!
Using colorful pegs on the pegboard to make shapes, patterns and mazes transformed into masterpieces of art that the children brought to circle and shared with their classmates.

Each child practiced saying the name and author of a favorite book that they had chosen to read to their book buddies.

The children were very excited to see their reading buddies from Mrs. Deegan's class when they visited our class this week. The boys and girls "picture read" one of their favorite books to a reading buddy.
On Thursday we were off to see our friend, Dr. Levitt, at the dentist's office where we we learned all about taking care of our teeth.

Dr. Levitt began by showing the boys and girls how to brush their teeth properly and how to floss. The children shared with him all of the healthy growing foods and then those that are not so good like candy and sweets. They learned what causes plaque and how cavities are formed. Next they learned why it is so important to visit our friends at the dentist and how much fun it is!
We received kisses from "Mr. Thirsty" the suction tube!
Dr. Levitt showed us his really neat glasses with magnifying glasses attached to see our teeth up close.
At the end of our visit the Good Tooth Fairy thanked us for coming when we looked in the magic mirror!
In the waiting room the children climbed aboard a submarine...what fun!!!

So exciting, the little caterpillar that we rescued having fallen from a leafless plant on the playground has been munching away on our Milkweed Plant. On Friday we observed that he had attached himself to a leaf hanging upside down in a "j" shape.
Exploring on Friday was full of fun activities! The children spread cream cheese on to butterfly crackers and attached carrot strips as antenna.
After reading "A Color of His Own" by Leo Lionni about how all animals have their own color except for the chameleon who changes to the color that he is on, the children painted their own colorful chameleons with stripes, dots and lines and then wore them on their arms!
Using the beginning sound the children helped insects find their homes!
Another interesting activity to explore was choosing different colors to mix and making predictions of what color they might make.

Some mixed the colors on their hands with a friend!
