Splashing into Sea Life

What a better introduction to learning about the creatures of the sea than a field trip to the Pier Aquarium! The children were so excited as they talked with their classmates about what they might see.
Upon arrival our tour guide showed us how to join our hands over our heads like fins as the little sharks began their tour.
After the children shared that we live in the state of Florida we saw a huge photograph of our state taken from space. They learned that we are surrounded by ocean water on all sides.
From the book "Charlie Clownfish and Annie A.," by Suzanne Tate the boys and girls learned that the sea anenome and the clownfish are the best of friends. The clownfish brings the sea anenome food and then it protects the clownfish from predators.
Touching a Chocolate Chip Sea Star using two gentle fingers was really fascinating.

Next was the prickly sea urchin.

How amazing, both the sea star and the sea urchin's mouths are underneath them!

The children enjoyed viewing the many beautiful aquariums.
Then off to feed those hungry pelicans some lunch!

What a fun trolley ride back to the bus!

This week the children made plexiglass prints by squeezing bottles of bio color paint on to two pieces of plexiglass making lines, curves, dots or zigzags. Next they placed a piece of paper between each piece creating beautiful prints on each side of the paper. The paper will be used to make jellyfish.
Many flavors of delicious ice cream are being served in the housekeeping area!
Making purple play-dough this week involved both math and science skills. The children helped measure the ingredients as Mrs. Mundell read the recipe aloud. The children observed the steam coming from the measuring cup of hot water. What could that be? Predictions were shared and then we made the connection to the water cycle. Just like those puddles that evaporated from the heat of the warm sun, the water was evaporating from being heated.
Will the water and oil mix?
What is this smell?
Yes, it is grape and when added to the flour, water, salt and oil it made our play-dough purple!

On Thursday we enjoyed the Kindergarten musical production of "The Little Red Hen" in both English and Spanish.
Meanwhile we had an exciting production with dancers in the Exploratorium!
Squeezing droppers of water color to a folded coffee filter was then opened into a symmetrical pair of butterfly wings.

Then the children used colorful markers on a clothespin to make the head, thorax and abdomen of the butterfly. Pipe cleaners were twisted and curled to make the antennae and sticker eyes were added.

Friday's Exploring activities were full of fun sea life activities! This week we read "The Rainbow Fish" by Marcus Pfister where we learned how important it is to share with our friends. The children made their very own rainbow fish by cutting a traced oval, gluing triangles for fins and colorful streamers for a tail. Then of course they added that one shiny scale!
Fine motor skills as well as eye hand coordination were used when lacing sea creatures.

Using rollers and a variety of paint colors the boys and girls painted pieces of bubble wrap.
Next they made prints by pressing a piece of paper on top of their painted bubble wrap. What neat designs were made!
The children used sea life stamps to decorate a banner.
Finishing touches of glitter were added to make it sparkle!
After enjoying a sea snack of blue jello, crumbled graham crackers and goldfish some created sea creature fossils in gak. Others enjoyed pouring over books about sea life!
